News about the proposed light rail in Bali.

Welcome to the Bali Railway newsletter!

My name is James Clark, and I’m the editor of Future Southeast Asia. This site covers transport and urban development in Southeast Asia, including the proposed Bali light rail.

Numerous proposals for a railway in Bali have been made over the years, which I have kept track of on this page. I also made a concept map that shows all of the proposals (plus some of my proposals).

There is now serious consideration for building a light rail from Ngurah Rai International Airport to Central Parkir Kuta.

Considering there have been so many proposals in the past, it’s fair to be sceptical of it being built now. The government is saying that they want to start in 2024, and with traffic jams getting worse, something needs to be done.

It’s worth noting that Indonesia is the only country in Southeast Asia that has built a transit railway outside of a capital city (the Palembang LRT), so maybe Indonesia will also build the next provincial transit system.

I have made a website for the railway at balirailway.com. This will cover all the details of the railway as they become known, and the newsletter will send the latest updates.

If you know someone who would be interested in reading about the development of the Bali railway then please share it.
